In an increasingly complex world, it's important that our nation's youth are prepared to bring knowledge and skills to solve problems, make sense of information, and know how to gather and evaluate evidence to make decisions. These are the kinds of skills that students develop in science, technology, engineering and math - disciplines collectively known as STEM.
On Wednesday, September 11, the Sangamon Valley Radio Club was asked to be part of the 5th annual STEM Career Fair held at the Rochester High School. Several hundred people – young and old – gathered at this free event to see and demonstrate various projects driven by the students. This included robots, drones, aviation, cyber defense, environmental science, coding, engineering, geographic information systems and much more. Various career-based groups also showed the public what they had to offer college bound students.
Todd Johnson, KD9BNQ, Roger Whitaker, K9LJB, and Mitch Hopper, K9ZXO presented the SVRC to the public with an interesting display of radio-to-repeaters, D-Star, Winlink, and all manner of amateur radio applications. We showed them a highly technical hobby that can work in with their lives and future careers. We met and talked with many who expressed an interest in amateur radio and our fine club or who were simply curious about our craft.
As a club activity, we look forward to participating again next year!
