ARES

Amateur Radio Emergency Service®

The Amateur Radio Emergency Service® (ARES) consists of licensed amateur radio operators who have voluntarily registered their qualifications and equipment, with their local ARES Emergency Coordinator, for communications duty in the public service when disaster strikes. Although most of us rely on cell phones during emergencies, there are times when local cell phone service is incapacitated by storms or other damage or cell phone services are overwhelmed by high demand. This is where amateur radio operators step up to fulfill a vital need in public service by assisting with emergency and disaster communications.

SVRC has cooperative agreements with these local served agencies:

  • The American Red Cross;
  • St. John's Hospital;
  • Memorial Medical Center (pending)

The cooperative agreements are mutually beneficial in that the SVRC enjoys secure meeting space, utilities, installation of the repeater and club station antenna on rooftops and other benefits courtesy of the served agencies and in return, SVRC provides vital public service communications. SVRC invites licensed ham radio operators to join ARES®. Please go to SVRC ARES Application to volunteer.

To promote and explain the activity, the SVRC produced a short HD video called, “Amateur Radio Prepares for the Worst: May 1, 2021 Simulated Emergency Training”.

The Hex Beam is finally operational!

W9DUA Hex Beam

The Hex Beam is in place and operational!  After months of planning and organizing, the Hex Beam was pressed into service for the VHF contest on Saturday, June 8, 2019.  The official antenna crew under the direction of senior club members, hauled heavy steel, concrete, and antenna  components up to the Red Cross building roof in several stages.  We now have extra directional capability for HF 20 meters and up – including 6 meters.  This unique antenna certainly gives our club location a distinctive visual footprint with the upside-down umbrella design.
